What is True

The Time is Now

Minneapolis Minnesota

The George Floyd story and his death is barely believable and it is totally unacceptable. No explanation is sensible and no excuse is justifiable! I want to think we are making progress in destroying racial prejudice and yet what is new is really very old! Prejudice is very much still alive and kicking!

Wrong response

How are we supposed to respond to this? It can no longer be ignored or pretended that things are getting better. Yet, the one thing Christians must do is provide a solution – and we have that solution.

One response is to NOT TELL PEOPLE YOU KNOW HOW THEY FEEL, because until you have been pulled over for no reason and had your car searched, you don’t know how that feels!

Secondly, avoid putting people into broad categories. Do not conclude that “all cops are bad cops”, and all black people are angry looters, and all white people are racial bigots. That is simply not true and it only enhances the wrong way people feel and escalates the prejudice people have! I join in the outrage but there has to be a better way to channel that outrage – and there is!

The power of the “Gospel” church

Ephesians 2:14 talks about what Christ did that no one thought was possible – He brought Jews and Gentiles together.

“For He Himself is our peace, who made both groups into one and broke down the barrier of the dividing wall.”

And then Galatians 3:28 says…

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”

The prejudice between Jews and Greeks was intense scorn and hatred, yet the early church reached out to all and brought all together in one family.

I want us, the family of Freeman Heights, to grasp how necessary and important it is that we continue in multi-ethnic ministry. And I want you to understand how crucial it is that you participate in breaking down dividing walls. If you are white we need you here worshiping with us and demonstrating to the world how we are one in Christ. If you are black we need you here worshiping with us and demonstrating to the world how we are one in Christ. If you are brown we need you here worshiping with us and demonstrating to the world how we are one in Christ. Let’s not demonstrate the power of the Gospel to make us one in theory but let us demonstrate it in life!

Our nation, any nation, will never solve the problem of racial prejudice. It is a heart condition and only JESUS can transform the heart. “Lord, transform our hearts to reach out and bring all people from all ethnicities into one family – the family of Christ!”
